Out of Home Care

Successful schooling contributes to an adult life that is personally rewarding, socially connected and economically sustained. Schools have an important role in supporting children and young people in out-of-home care to maximise their life outcomes.

Students enrolled in government schools who are living in out of home care live in many different home situations such as foster care, kinship care, small group homes or individual settings supported by care workers.

Some students may experience difficulties in successfully engaging with education because of their care circumstances particularly as they transition into and between care settings and schools. The school may organise for additional support to be provided during these transition periods. This supplementary support is in the form of teacher and/or school learning support officer relief.

Our school learning support team oversees the development, review and monitoring of an individual education plan for each child who is in out of home care. Plans are developed collaboratively with:

  • the child
  • the principal or nominee
  • the teacher
  • the learning support teacher
  • the school counsellor
  • the carer
  • the caseworker
  • other professional staff (for example, speech therapists) and designated non government agencies, where appropriate.
